This was a fun book. Victor seems to be a middle aged professor with an obsession regarding Napoleon. I think I could relate to the character, in that I can have an appreciation for history, but at the same time don't want to find myself at Gettysburg in 1863. Victor was not a deep character he seemed driven by curiosity and loneliness. Again being middle aged and single, maybe I could relate to a bit to readily.

Despite the lack of depth displayed, I felt as if I came to love and know the characters in short order. Victor befriends a fellow Russian soldier mid story and is only with him a short while, but I feel very close to this minor character.

I liked the overall atmosphere of the genuine kindness shown of the Russian civilians toward our hero. It was small things, a place to sleep in a barn, a meal, a school boy sacrifices his paper he needs for school. I know its fiction but my heart went out to these people who found themselves in the middle of Napoleon's advance.

The ending seemed a bit rushed but it was a nice ending. The editing needs to be polished up a bit...but for a self published indie book it was absolutely a delight to read. Short action filled chapters that made want to read just one more chapter...

I look forward to see what else Peter Lean has to offer.

The Guns of Napoleon Peter Lean 9781910162668 Books Reviews

I love the idea of time-travel, and especially the idea that what might be done in the past can change our present. Like every author I have a book or two in mind to explore this idea. (I know there’s a technical term for this, but am not sure which the right one is The butterfly effect? Temporal paradox? Bootstrap paradox? Retrocausality? Take your pick. You get the idea.)

When I first read The Guns of Napoleon, I wasn’t quite sure what I was in for. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself in for an enjoyable ride using this idea with a real historical figure (Napoleon Bonaparte) and an unassuming professor who tries to spread his love for all things Napoleon to his disinterested students. A present day man used to today’s luxuries thrown into the rough past that he’s unprepared for has to figure out how to survive to get back home. Due to a mistake made by his time-travelling companion, history is changed and he eventually returns to an unexpected world, the only man with the knowledge of how it’s changed.

Peter Lean gives us Victor, who could be any one of us, and skillfully weaves a tale around his passion for history and the unexpected chance to get to witness firsthand the object of his great knowledge. Who among us wouldn’t jump at the same chance? Victor is a great character because he is us. The rest of the story is an added bonus. All of the secondary characters really only show up for a short time, but Lean manages to make their indelible impact on Victor’s life clear and concise in their scenes. Great authors are able to do that subtle trick without us even realizing they’re doing it.

Even if you don’t consider yourself a fan of historical novels, this is one you’re going to enjoy. The history to me was secondary to a character study, and how even the smallest of our actions can have a profound effect on the world we live in. I look forward to reading the sequel to this novel.
Awful, how I finished this book I will never know.
I felt the idea of going back in time to see, talk to, uncover the truth about a giant of military European history was a great idea, instead I got page-filling waffle.
While the plot is consistent (almost - Schmidt's behavior is incomprehensible....possibly the author was thinking of a sequel?) and the characters behave (albeit lack fire), I was bored by this book. I love time-travel tales, thought the idea behind this yarn was solid, but protagonist Victor and his trepidation bored me to tears. Trepidation is the hallmark of the Russian novel, but Victor is neither Rodion Raskolnikov nor Pierre Bezukhov. Sorry.
I like this book but it feels like is missing some ending...
Well the author is Italian - so I don't expect very great flights of English literature! The criticisms I have are factual in nature.

The book is well plotted overall. But.. Peter has events happening rather conveniently. He has Natalia living all alone in a house in the middle of nowhere in the 1812 Russian countryside. The mind boggles. French soldiers appear conveniently - again remember the French are spread over thousands of square miles - and shoot the hero's companion. The hero shows some propensity to emulate Western cowboy heroes and recover from wounds quite easily etc.

While Napoleon is about, the story is interesting. The second half drags a bit.
This time travel novel has a solid premise, good twists, and an ending you don't see coming until most of the way through - which turns out like you expect it, but the journey is worth it.

I was going to give it 3 stars because the translation from Italian leaves the flow of the narrative makes your brain jog to the right or left sometimes and affects the pacing in others. But the research and detail to historical events and the no-nonsense creation of the alternate future are seamlessly intertwined. This top-notch world creation deserves the extra star.

Well done.
